Name: J&M Special Effects

Neighborhood: Red Hook

J&M Special Effects was founded in 1985 and stands as the premier source for the design and supply of special effects in the New York area, delivering exceptional pyrotechnics, smoke, rain, and more to stages from Broadway and beyond. In 2024, SBIDC assisted J&M with their relocation from Gowanus to Red Hook, connecting them with lease review resources and helping them navigate a tricky zoning issue by advocating with City agencies and the local Councilmember’s office.

What our Members Are Saying about SBIDC

During the first months of 2020 we were optimistic and excited to start our third year in business. When Covid hit NYC, 80% of our projects were stalled. SBIDC supported us through that time and helped us access financing, secure an MWBE certification and receive business training. We are grateful and feel that SBIDC has our back, we are not alone anymore.

The fact that this class is designed around creative entrepreneurs and what we all need as artists is extremely valuable. I love the structure and approachability of each session and the facilitators were all super knowledgeable and great.

Red Hook is home to the largest concentration of Civil War-era warehouses in the city. One of the neighborhood’s main attractions is The Waterfront Barge Museum. Anchored at Red Hook’s Pier 44 the museum is housed in the Lehigh Valley Barge No. 79 and is the only surviving example of a wooden-covered cargo barge.

Immigrants played a strong role in the development of Sunset Park. The area was originally settled by the Dutch and remained farmland until the grid was established in the 1830s. Up until the 1980s, Sunset Park was home to a large Scandinavian community. Today it is known for its vibrant Hispanic and Asian communities.

Gowanus is home to one of Kings County’s oldest bridges, the elegant Carroll Street bridge. It first opened in 1889 and uses a retractile method to allow boats on the Gowanus canal to pass.
